Usual HS code for extension board (import)
8536 69 90
Plugs and socket-outlets, other. A multi-socket extension board is mainly a set of sockets on a cord.
Extension boards look like the simplest product in the electrical aisle. But importers often ask me why two brokers gave them two different codes for the same spike guard. The honest answer is that this product sits right on the line between two headings, and the details decide which side it falls on.
Let me walk you through it.
The usual HS code: 8536 69 90
| Level | Code | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter | 85 | Electrical machinery and equipment |
| Heading | 8536 | Electrical apparatus for switching, protecting or connecting circuits, up to 1,000 V |
| Subheading | 8536 69 | Plugs and sockets, other |
| Tariff item | 8536 69 90 | Other |
A basic extension board is a row of socket-outlets on a cord with a plug at the end. Its job is to connect appliances to the mains. That points to the plugs and sockets lines in 8536 69, and 8536 69 90 is the line most commonly used in Indian practice.
Why not 8537 (distribution boards)?
This is the classic disagreement. Heading 8537 covers boards and panels equipped with two or more apparatus of heading 8536 for electric control or distribution. Some brokers argue that a spike guard with sockets, a switch, a fuse and surge protection is exactly that, and use 8537 10.
The counter-argument is that 8537 is really meant for switchboards and control panels, and that a consumer extension cord is essentially a multi-socket. Both codes appear in Indian import data. Which one fits depends on how much "control" apparatus your board actually has, and whether your CHA and the assessing officer agree. This is worth settling before your first shipment, not at assessment.
Not sure which line your extension board falls under?
Describe it or snap a photo. EximSetu asks the 2โ4 questions that change the code, then gives the 8-digit HS code with reasoning, the duty in rupees and the compliance checklist.
Check my extension board โWhat decides the final classification
- Plain multi-socket with cord: strongest case for 8536 69.
- Individual switches, fuse, surge protection, overload breaker: the more apparatus it has, the stronger the 8537 argument.
- USB charging ports built in: adds a converter function; check whether customs sees it differently.
- Cord reels for industrial use and travel adaptors without a cord can fall under different lines.
- Smart boards with Wi-Fi add WPC and may change the analysis.
How import duty is worked out
Duty is calculated on the assessable value (CIF in rupees): Basic Customs Duty, then the Social Welfare Surcharge on that duty, then IGST on the total. 8536 and 8537 lines don't always carry the same rate, so the code choice can change your landed cost. Check the current rate for your line on the day you file.

Compliance checklist for extension boards
| Requirement | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| BIS for plugs and sockets | ๐ด Mandatory | Plugs and socket-outlets (IS 1293) are under a BIS Quality Control Order and need the ISI mark under a BIS licence. The sockets and plug on your board are expected to comply. |
| BIS for the cord | ๐ด Mandatory | PVC insulated flexible cables (IS 694) are under a QCO. The cable used in the cord should be ISI marked. |
| BIS for cord extension sets | ๐ Check | A dedicated standard for cord extension sets (IS 18830) exists; at the time of writing it was reported as not yet mandatory. Check its status before you import. |
| Legal Metrology | ๐ด For retail packs | Importer name and address, MRP, net quantity and customer care details on the pack. |
| WPC approval | ๐ Check | Only for smart extension boards with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. |

Mistakes that cost importers money
- Not agreeing the code with your CHA before the first shipment, then facing a reassessment.
- Assuming a CE or UL mark is enough. India needs the ISI mark where a QCO applies.
- Using Indian-style sockets from a factory without a BIS licence for IS 1293.
- Mixing USB-port boards and plain boards on one invoice line.
My advice
For extension boards, the BIS side is the real gatekeeper. A licence under a QCO takes time and involves a factory inspection, so start with a factory that already holds one. Then check your exact model's code, especially if it has USB ports or surge protection, before you place the order.

Frequently asked questions
โธWhat is the HS code for an extension board in India?
A plain extension board is often classified under 8536 69 90 (plugs and sockets, other). Spike guards with switches, fuses and surge protection are sometimes classified under 8537 10.
โธIs a spike guard classified under 8536 or 8537?
It depends on its features. A simple multi-socket points to 8536 69, while a board with several protection and control devices can be argued under 8537. Agree the code with your CHA before importing.
โธDo extension boards need BIS certification in India?
The plugs, sockets and cables used are under BIS Quality Control Orders and need the ISI mark. A separate standard for cord extension sets exists; check whether it is mandatory at the time you import.
โธCan I import extension boards with a CE mark only?
No. Where a BIS Quality Control Order applies, the product needs the ISI mark under a BIS licence. A CE or UL mark does not replace it.
