Frequently asked questions
▸How is import duty calculated in India?
Duty is worked out on the assessable value, normally the CIF value converted to rupees at the CBIC exchange rate. BCD (and AIDC where it applies) is charged on the assessable value, Social Welfare Surcharge is 10% of BCD, and IGST is charged on the assessable value plus all customs duties. Anti-dumping or safeguard duty is added for specific goods and origins.
▸What if I don't know the freight and insurance?
Under the Customs Valuation Rules, if actual freight isn't known it is taken as 20% of the FOB value, and insurance as 1.125% of FOB. The calculator uses these figures when you leave the fields blank.
▸Which exchange rate should I use?
CBIC notifies import exchange rates, normally twice a month. Use the rate in force on the date the Bill of Entry is filed.
▸Can I claim the IGST back?
Usually yes. GST-registered importers can claim IGST paid at customs as input tax credit. BCD, AIDC, SWS and anti-dumping duty are a real cost and cannot be claimed back.
▸Where do I find the BCD and IGST rate for my product?
The rate depends on the exact 8-digit ITC-HS code and any exemption notification, and can change with each Budget. You can check the Customs Tariff and notifications on the CBIC website, or let EximSetu's AI report find the code and rates from a product photo.
