Usual HS code for mixer grinder (import)

8509 40 10

Domestic food grinders. A mixer grinder is a motor-driven kitchen appliance, so it goes to 8509, not heating or industrial lines.

The mixer grinder is the most Indian kitchen appliance there is. Every home has one, and a lot of brands now source the motor body or the whole unit from China. Importers often ask me if it's the same code as a blender or a food processor. The answer is mostly yes, with a split you should know about.

Here's how I'd approach it.

The usual HS code: 8509 40 10

LevelCodeDescription
Chapter85Electrical machinery and equipment
Heading8509Electro-mechanical domestic appliances with self-contained electric motor
Subheading8509 40Food grinders and mixers; fruit or vegetable juice extractors
Tariff item8509 40 10Food grinders

A mixer grinder has a motor built into its base that drives blades in a jar. That makes it an electro-mechanical domestic appliance, which is exactly heading 8509. Its main job is grinding (masalas, chutneys, batter), which is why the Indian tariff item for food grinders is the usual fit.

Why not 8509 40 90, 8516 or 8438?

The most common question is the last two digits. India splits 8509 40 into food grinders (10) and other (90). A juicer, a hand blender or a simple smoothie blender is often filed under 90. A mixer grinder with grinding jars sits more naturally under 10. If your product is a "juicer mixer grinder" combo, the main function decides, and this is where a lookup helps.

Two wrong headings also turn up. 8516 is for heating appliances, and a mixer doesn't heat. 8438 is for industrial food-processing machinery. A heavy commercial grinder for a hotel kitchen can be argued there, but a household mixer grinder cannot.

Not sure which line your mixer grinder falls under?

What decides the final classification

  • Main function: grinding (40 10) vs blending, juicing or whisking (40 90).
  • Domestic or industrial: commercial wet grinders and large kitchen machines can move to 8438.
  • Motor in the base or not: a jar or blade set imported alone is a part, not the appliance.
  • Heating feature: a "cooking blender" that heats soup can be argued differently. Check it.

How import duty is worked out

Duty is calculated on the assessable value (CIF in rupees): Basic Customs Duty, then the Social Welfare Surcharge on that duty, then IGST on the total. Rates change by Budget notification, so check the current rate for your exact tariff item on the day you file.

Compliance checklist for mixer grinders

RequirementStatusWhat it means
BIS certification (QCO)🔴 MandatoryFood processors and grinders are under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances QCO, in force from 1 October 2026 for most manufacturers. The manufacturer needs a BIS licence and the ISI mark.
E-waste EPR🟠 CheckMany kitchen appliances are in Schedule I of the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022. If yours is covered, the importer needs EPR registration with CPCB.
Legal Metrology🔴 For retail packsImporter name and address, MRP, net quantity, month of import and customer care details.
Spare jars and blades🟠 CheckParts imported separately are classified as parts and may need their own entry.

Mistakes that cost importers money

  • Using 8509 40 90 for every model without checking whether "food grinder" fits better.
  • Calling a household unit "industrial" to use 8438. Customs looks at the product, not the label.
  • Importing a new wattage variant that isn't covered by the BIS licence.
  • Shipping jars and bodies separately without thinking about how each part is classified.

My advice

Indian buyers are fussy about mixer grinders: wattage, jar count, motor warranty. Your compliance should be just as tight. Check the code for your exact combination of jars and functions, and get the BIS licence confirmed before production starts.
