HS Code for Remote Control Car in India: Toy Code, BIS and WPC

Usual HS code for remote control car (import)
9503 00
An RC toy car is an electronic toy under heading 9503, remote included. India's 8-digit split separates electronic toys from others.
Remote control cars are a great example of a product that sits across three rulebooks at once. It's a toy, so the BIS Toys QCO applies. It's electronic, so the electric toys standard comes in. And it talks to its remote over radio, so WPC can come in too.
Importers often ask me only about the HS code. In my experience, the code is the easy part. The approvals are where shipments get held.
The usual HS code: 9503 00
| Level | Code | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter | 95 | Toys, games and sports requisites |
| Heading | 9503 | Wheeled toys, dolls, other toys, scale models, puzzles |
| Subheading | 9503 00 | All of the above (one subheading) |
| Tariff item | 9503 00 xx | In India, the electronic toys line for a working RC car |
Heading 9503 covers toys and reduced-size ("scale") models, working or not. An RC car is a scale model built for play, and the remote control is packed and sold with it as one set. So the whole set is classified as the toy.
Because an RC car has a motor, circuit board and radio receiver, it normally goes on India's electronic toys line. I'm showing six digits because India splits 9503 00 into separate lines and you need the electronic one.
Why not 8526 92 or Chapter 87?
Two wrong codes come up with RC cars:
- 8526 92 (radio remote control apparatus). Some suppliers code the set by its remote. But the remote is only an accessory to the toy here. 8526 92 is more relevant if you import remotes on their own.
- Chapter 87 (vehicles). An RC car isn't a vehicle; nobody rides it. Ride-on electric cars for children are a separate question, and even those usually stay in 9503 as wheeled toys.
Hobby-grade RC cars for adults (fast nitro or brushless models) still usually fall under 9503 as scale models, but expect customs to ask more questions about them.
What decides the final code
- Electronic or not: almost every RC car is electronic, but a wired or pull-back car may not be.
- Toy vs drone: flying RC models with cameras are drones and go to 8806, a completely different set of rules.
- Sold as a set or separately: spare remotes, batteries and motors imported on their own have their own codes.
- Ride-on cars: children's ride-on electric cars are wheeled toys, but check them separately because of size and battery.
Not sure which line your remote control car falls under?
Describe it or snap a photo. EximSetu asks the 2โ4 questions that change the code, then gives the 8-digit HS code with reasoning, the duty in rupees and the compliance checklist.

Duty is calculated on the assessable value (CIF in rupees): Basic Customs Duty, then the Social Welfare Surcharge on that duty, then IGST on the total. Toy duties have gone up a lot in recent years, and electronic toys may carry a different IGST from plain toys, so check the current rate for the electronic toys line on the day you file.

Compliance checklist for remote control cars
| Requirement | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| BIS Toys QCO (ISI mark) | ๐ด Mandatory | RC cars for children under 14 are toys under the Toys (Quality Control) Order. The factory needs a BIS licence and the product must carry the ISI mark. |
| IS 15644 (electric toys) | ๐ด Mandatory | Battery-operated toys are tested to the electric toys standard in addition to IS 9873. |
| WPC (ETA) | ๐ Check | Remotes on 2.4 GHz are on a de-licensed band, but wireless equipment generally needs Equipment Type Approval (often by self-declaration) before import. Confirm for your frequency. |
| Battery EPR | ๐ Check | If the car comes with rechargeable batteries, the importer may count as a producer under the Battery Waste Management Rules. |
| Dangerous goods shipping | ๐ Check | Lithium batteries packed in or with the car make it DG cargo for air freight. |
| Legal Metrology | ๐ด For retail packs | Importer name and address, MRP, net quantity and customer care details on the pack. |
๐ด Mandatory ยท ๐ Check ยท ๐ข Not required
Mistakes that cost importers money
- Coding the whole set as a radio remote because of the 2.4 GHz label on the box.
- Missing WPC ETA and finding out only when customs asks for it.
- Assuming a BIS toy licence covers every RC model in the supplier's catalogue.
- Booking air freight for lithium-battery cars without DG paperwork.
My advice
For RC cars, sort the approvals in this order: BIS licence for the factory, then WPC ETA for the radio, then battery and EPR. Once those are clear, the HS code is straightforward. If your model is hobby-grade, a ride-on, or has a camera, check it with a lookup before you order, because those variants are where the code and rules change.

Frequently asked questions
โธWhat is the HS code for a remote control car in India?
A remote control toy car falls under heading 9503 00, on India's electronic toys line. The remote packed with it is classified as part of the toy.
โธDo RC toy cars need WPC approval in India?
Usually, because they use a radio remote. Most 2.4 GHz devices need Equipment Type Approval (often by self-declaration) before import. Check for your model's frequency.
โธDo remote control cars need BIS certification?
Yes, if they are toys for children under 14. They come under the Toys QCO and are tested to IS 9873 and the electric toys standard IS 15644.
โธIs an RC drone classified like an RC car?
No. Drones, including toy-like ones with cameras, are classified under heading 8806 with their own rules, not under 9503.
