Usual HS code for wrist watch (import)
9102 11 00
Battery-powered wrist watches with a hands-only (analogue) display, in a case not of precious metal.
Watches are one of the few products where the tariff asks very specific questions: how is it powered, what does the display show, and what is the case made of? Get one answer wrong and you're on a different line.
Importers often ask me for "the watch HS code" as if there's just one. There are several, so let's go through how to find yours.
The usual HS code: 9102 11 00
| Level | Code | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter | 91 | Clocks and watches and parts thereof |
| Heading | 9102 | Wrist-watches and other watches, other than those of heading 9101 |
| Subheading | 9102 11 | Electrically operated wrist-watches, with mechanical display only |
| Tariff item | 9102 11 00 | With mechanical display only |
The most common fashion watch imported into India is a quartz analogue watch in a steel, alloy or plastic case. That's battery-operated ("electrically operated") with hands only ("mechanical display"), so it lands in 9102 11 00.
Change one detail and the line changes:
- Digital display only (LCD numbers): 9102 12.
- Both hands and digital display (ana-digi): 9102 19.
- Automatic or hand-wound mechanical watches: 9102 21 or 9102 29.
Why not 8517 62 or 9101?
Smartwatches are the first mix-up. A watch that connects to a phone and sends or receives data is generally classified as communication equipment under 8517 62, not as a watch under chapter 91. That brings BIS and WPC requirements with it. A simple fitness band without communication can be argued differently, so check yours.
9101 is the second. If the case is of precious metal or metal clad with precious metal (gold, silver, platinum), the watch moves to heading 9101. Gold-plated or "gold tone" steel is not the same as gold, but the supplier's description needs to be clear.
What decides the final classification
- Power source: battery (quartz) vs automatic or manual winding.
- Display: hands only, digits only, or both.
- Case material: precious metal or clad cases go to 9101.
- Connectivity: Bluetooth sync and notifications point to smartwatch codes.
- Strap shipped separately: watch straps have their own code in chapter 91.
Not sure which line your wrist watch falls under?
Describe it or snap a photo. EximSetu asks the 2–4 questions that change the code, then gives the 8-digit HS code with reasoning, the duty in rupees and the compliance checklist.
Check my wrist watch →How import duty is worked out
Duty is calculated on the assessable value (CIF in rupees): Basic Customs Duty, then the Social Welfare Surcharge on that duty, then IGST on the total. Watch rates have been changed in past Budgets, and smartwatches follow a different duty line altogether. Check the current rate for your exact code on the day you file.
Run your exact watch through a lookup, or put your numbers in the import duty calculator.
Compliance checklist for wrist watches
| Requirement | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Legal Metrology | 🔴 For retail packs | Importer name and address, MRP, month and year of import and customer care details on the pack. |
| Battery EPR | 🟠 Check | Quartz watches contain a button cell. Importers of products with batteries can count as producers under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. Confirm whether you need EPR registration. |
| BIS / WPC (smartwatches only) | 🟠 Check | Not for ordinary watches, but smartwatches have their own BIS and WPC requirements. See the smartwatch page. |
| Brand and IPR checks | 🟠 Check | Copies of well-known watch brands are a common reason for customs seizure. |
| Precious metal content | 🟠 Check | If the case is gold or silver, the classification and possibly hallmarking questions change. |
🔴 Mandatory · 🟠 Check · 🟢 Not required
Mistakes that cost importers money
- Declaring smartwatches as ordinary watches to avoid BIS and WPC.
- Using 9102 11 00 for a whole mixed range that includes digital and ana-digi models.
- Vague descriptions like "fashion watch" with no mention of movement or display.
- Copying luxury brand designs and losing the whole consignment.
My advice
For watches, write the invoice description properly: movement (quartz or automatic), display (analogue, digital or both), case material and whether it connects to a phone. With those four facts the code almost picks itself. If you're unsure on any model, check it with a lookup before shipping.
