HS Code for Gaming Console in India: Classification, BIS and Duty

Usual HS code for gaming console (import)
9504 50 00
Video game consoles and machines, other than coin or token operated ones. PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo-type consoles sit here.
Gaming consoles are powerful computers inside, which is exactly why people get the code wrong. Suppliers and even some CHAs reach for a computer heading. But the tariff has a heading written specifically for video game consoles, and it's in the games chapter, not with computers.
If you're bringing in consoles, handheld retro machines or controllers for resale, here's how I'd look at it.
The usual HS code: 9504 50 00
| Level | Code | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter | 95 | Toys, games and sports requisites |
| Heading | 9504 | Video game consoles and machines, table or parlour games |
| Subheading | 9504 50 | Video game consoles and machines, other than of subheading 9504 30 |
| Tariff item | 9504 50 00 | Video game consoles and machines |
The heading names the product directly. Home consoles that plug into a TV and handheld game machines are both covered. 9504 30 is for coin or token operated machines, like arcade cabinets, so a home console falls into 9504 50.
Why not 8471 (computers)?
This is the mix-up I see most. A console has a CPU, GPU, storage and an operating system, so it "looks like" a computer. But when a heading describes the product by name, that heading normally wins over a general one. 9504 says "video game consoles"; 8471 says data processing machines.
The grey area is handheld gaming PCs that run a full desktop operating system and can be used like a laptop. Those can be argued under 8471 30, and if they are, the laptop import authorisation and BIS rules come into play. Check these carefully.
What decides the final classification
- Primary purpose: built for gaming (9504 50) vs a general-purpose computer that also plays games (8471).
- Coin-operated: arcade machines go to 9504 30.
- Controllers and accessories shipped alone: these are usually parts and accessories of 9504 consoles, a different line.
- Bundles: a console with games and a controller in one retail box generally goes with the console.

Duty is calculated on the assessable value (CIF in rupees): Basic Customs Duty, then the Social Welfare Surcharge on that duty, then IGST on the total. Chapter 95 goods are not treated like IT products for duty, so don't assume the laptop treatment applies. Check the current rates for 9504 50 00 on the day you file.

Compliance checklist for gaming consoles
| Requirement | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| BIS registration (CRS) | ๐ด Mandatory | "Electronic Games (Video)" is on the BIS Compulsory Registration list (IS 616). Each model needs registration in the manufacturer's name. |
| WPC approval | ๐ Check | Wireless controllers and the console's Wi-Fi/Bluetooth use radio. Check Equipment Type Approval. |
| E-waste EPR | ๐ Check | Check whether your console is covered under the E-Waste Rules schedule, and register with CPCB if so. |
| Legal Metrology | ๐ด For retail packs | Importer details, MRP, net quantity, date of import and customer care on the box. |
| Dangerous goods shipping | ๐ Check | Handhelds and wireless controllers contain lithium batteries (UN 3481). |
๐ด Mandatory ยท ๐ Check ยท ๐ข Not required
Mistakes that cost importers money
- Accepting an 8471 code for a standard console.
- Importing grey-market or other-region units without checking BIS for that exact model.
- Assuming handheld gaming PCs follow the console code.
- Shipping controllers separately without checking how they're classified.
My advice
Consoles are straightforward once you accept they're games, not computers. Get BIS sorted for the exact model and region version. If you're looking at a handheld that runs a full operating system, check that variant before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
โธWhat is the HS code for a gaming console in India?
Video game consoles such as PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles are usually classified under 9504 50 00 (video game consoles and machines, other than coin or token operated).
โธIs a gaming console classified as a computer under 8471?
Usually not. Heading 9504 names video game consoles specifically, so it takes priority over the general computer heading. Handheld gaming PCs with a full operating system can be a grey area.
โธDo gaming consoles need BIS certification in India?
Electronic video games are on the BIS Compulsory Registration list, so each console model needs registration by its manufacturer before import.

A controller shipped with the console usually goes with the console. Shipped alone, it is generally treated as a part or accessory of 9504 consoles, which is a different tariff line.
